Ingleside's Palms Are Struggling. There's No Replacement Plan
Palms are a "California" aesthetic choice that doesn’t work in foggy Ingleside but there’s more to the story.
It's been over two years since a three-alarm fire damaged the U.S. Post Office and two other buildings on West Portal Avenue.
The U.S. Post Office on West Portal Avenue will reopen over two years after a three-alarm fire burned through its walls on Monday.
Acting San Francisco Postmaster Sunil Chanan will lead an 8 a.m. grand reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"PO Box and retail services will be available at this location to conveniently service the community," U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Kristina Uppal said in a statement.
The 3,502-square-foot facility houses 520 PO Boxes in a charming storefront dating back to the mid-1940s.
"Our office worked closely with the property owner and city departments to get the space back online as soon as possible," District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar wrote in her newsletter. "We know how difficult it has been on our residents and businesses to lose this essential service."
Several West Portal Avenue three buildings with six addresses were damaged in the April 2022 fire. White Daisy Nail Spa, one of the businesses destroyed by the fire, relocated to Ingleside's Ocean Avenue last summer. Officials said the fire appeared to be caused by a roofing crew.
