Neighborhood nonprofits are organizing an Easter Basket Giveaway to support neighborhood families for Friday, April 2, 2021.
The OMI Cultural Participation Project and the OMI Family Resource Center will host an Easter Basket Giveaway for neighborhood families early next month.
The nonprofit organizations are expecting to give away 200 Easter baskets. They have 99 families registered to participate as of March 4.
“The idea is to reenergize the [Ocean View-Merced Heights-Ingleside],” OMICPP Executive Director Maurice Rivers said. “People need something to look forward to.”
Rivers, who organized the neighborhood’s first Community Baby Shower giveaway last month that served over 50 families and drew donations of diapers, children’s books, personal protective equipment and gift cards, plans to make the Easter event an annual tradition.
“With the vaccine and reopening underway, I want to give a sense of new normal to the neighborhood,” Rivers said.
OMIFRC, a project of YMCA Urban Services, is managing on-site registration and supplying Easter basket items.
Rivers hired the barbers from Nate’s Barber Shop to provide barbecue for registrants. Walk ups will have to pay.
Depending on the pandemic health protocols, the next events OMICPP organizes may be the annual car show on Lee Avenue at Ocean Avenue on Saturday, May 15, 2021 and possibly an event for graduates.
