The service reductions impact one bus route during the midday and two rail lines on the weekends.

Muni service cuts are coming to the greater Ingleside neighborhood starting Feb. 1.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced last week that, due to financial constraints, it would reduce the frequency of the midday service on the 43 Masonic by 15%, or from 12 minutes to 15 minutes, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Additional routes, such as the 24 Divisadero — 10 minutes to 12 minutes — and 38 Geary local route — eight minutes to 10 minutes — will also have a reduction in service during the same hours.

Other service changes starting next month include operating only one-car trains on the K Ingleside and M Ocean View on weekends. Transit officials said the change will help reduce maintenance and cleaning costs by operating fewer train cars. The SFMTA noted that weekend ridership on the two rail lines is less crowded in comparison to the N Judah and T Third Street rail lines.

The SFMTA is facing a budget crunch with a projected deficit of more than $300 million starting July 2026 but is already having to make slight reductions in services this year to match Muni service with current revenue resources.

Sean Kennedy, the agency’s chief planning officer, said in November to the SFMTA board that the SFMTA will work on outreach in late January or early February to discuss plans for Muni service summer which could lead to further service reductions.

The Controller’s Office and the SFMTA with city supervisors and transit advocates have been working together as part of the Muni Funding Group to make recommendations on the future of Muni service if the agency is unable to close its budget gap and ways to find new revenue sources. The group reconvenes later this month.

Other Muni service changes include stop changes on the 29 Sunset along Sunset Boulevard. Seven stops will move from the near side to the far side of the intersection so that the 29 buses can take advantage of future transit signal priority improvements.

More information about the service cuts can be found on the SFMTA’s website.
