San Francisco residents, especially on the west side, can expect the annual noise and traffic of Outside Lands as the three-day music festival starts Friday in Golden Gate Park. The music and culture extravaganza is expected to attract at least 75,000 people a day with Espresso singer Sabrina Carpenter and rock band The Killers anchoring the three-day festival.
City officials are encouraging concertgoers to take public transit to the festival as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is expected to provide additional service during specific times on routes near and close to Golden Gate Park.
Muni will have extra service on the N Judah rail and 5R Fulton rapid bus route on each day of the festival. Additional service on the N will be from 3 p.m. – midnight and extra service on the 5R will be from 2 – 8 p.m. The first stop for the 5R will be at Market and Sansome streets and the last stop will be at Fulton Street and 30th Avenue.
At the end of each night of the festival, Muni will have a 5X Fulton Express bus service running from Fulton Street and 30th Avenue to Civic Center station from 9 – 11 p.m. Muni passengers can expect crowding on other Muni bus routes that service Golden Gate Park, including on the 7 Haight/Noriega, 28 19th Avenue, 29 Sunset and 44 O'Shaughnessy.
Road closures for vehicles are already taking place inside Golden Gate Park, beginning Monday and lasting through Aug. 14, John F. Kennedy Drive between Tranverse Street and 36th Avenue for loading and unloading for the festival, according to the Recreation and Park Department. Other road closures around the concert area began last week.
Ride-hailing vehicles pick-up and drop-off locations are located on the north side of the park on Irving Street between 25th and 27th avenues and on the south side of the park near George Washington High School on the north side of Balboa Street between 30th and 31st avenues and on the west side of 30th Avenue Ave between Balboa and Anza streets, according to the SFMTA.
Temporary taxi stands are located on south side of Fulton Street between 24th and 25th avenues and between 28th and 29th avenues. Additionally, taxi stands are located on the north side of Fulton Street between 26th and 27th avenues and between 33rd and 34th avenues, according to the SFMTA.
Attendees can also purchase single-day and or three-day shuttle passes on the Outside Lands website. If biking to Outside Lands, event organizers will provide free self-parking areas at the southern and eastern portions of the festival site.
The SFMTA said on its website that they will respond via 311 either by phone or the app to any complaints of blocked driveways or sidewalks. Additionally, event organizers said they will staff a community hotline that residents can call with concerns during specific dates and hours.
Following Outside Lands on Aug. 17, Golden Gate Park will hold another concert at the Polo Fields with System of a Down and Deftones. Last September, the Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with Another Planet Entertainment, which organizes Outside Lands, to put on at least two to three ticketed concert events following the weekend after the music festival as well as free concerts in Civic Center Plaza, Union Square and Embarcadero for three years.
