In this week’s newsletter, we check in on the neighborhood's new donut and bagel bakery and a lot more.
A new shop in Ingleisde’s Lakewood Plaza is serving up fresh donuts, bagels and more.
A new bagel and donut shop opened on Ingleside’s Ocean Avenue late last week that offers the usual classic donuts, like old fashioned, buttermilk and twists.
North Bay Bagels and Donuts opened on Friday in the former location occupied by Wow Burgers, which had formerly been an outpost of the Muscle Maker Grill chain restaurant. Before that, the spot was occupied by KFC/Taco Bell before it shuttered in 2020. The store offers 20% off orders as a grand opening special through Thursday.
Bory Sroy, owner of the shop, said she would drive around the neighborhood and saw an opportunity to open a donut and bagel shop as there were few cafes offering donuts and bagels in the neighborhood.
“This is a good area with parking,” Sroy said. She added that she saw several businesses open and close at the location but still decided that opening a donut shop in the plaza was a good location.
Inside offers ample seating for customers who want to sit and enjoy their donuts or sandwiches.
To some customers, the menu and donuts may be reminiscent of another donut shop in the Richmond District. That’s because Sroy is also the business owner of All Star Donuts at the corner of Clement Street and 10th Avenue. She and her husband have owned the business for 20 years.
Sroy said she came to the U.S. 20 years ago from Cambodia with her husband, who is a baker.
“My husband knows how to bake already, so we know that’s a skill and why we started the business,” Sroy said.
The offerings at the shop go beyond just donuts and bagels. Sroy’s shop offers breakfast sandwiches and a variety of other sandwiches, such as a Philly Cheesesteak, a favorite of customers at her Clement Street location. The store also offers traditional sandwiches as well, including roast beef, ham and turkey. The store also offers a variety of hot coffee from Peerless Coffee and Tea.
Several customers already came trickling in late Saturday morning, including Lisset Lopez, who stopped by to purchase a few donuts.
“After seeing so many like different businesses come and go from here, it's really nice to see a donut shop, bagel shop because you don't see them in the general area,” Lopez said. ”Hopefully, in the near future, I see more folks coming in here and supporting the local businesses in the Ingleside area.”
