Ingleside's Palms Are Struggling. There's No Replacement Plan
Palms are a "California" aesthetic choice that doesn’t work in foggy Ingleside but there’s more to the story.
Zamora, a current candidate for a seat on the college’s board, replaces Trustee Murrell Green.
Mayor London Breed appointed Luis Zamora to the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees on Tuesday. He replaces Trustee Murrell Green, who announced his resignation due to “personal reasons.”
Zamora, a current candidate for a seat on the college’s board who works as the city attorney’s director of community relations and executive affairs, was sworn in in front of city leaders and will serve the remainder of Murrell’s term through January of next year.
Zamora joins the college at a crucial time as its leaders attempt to work through a warning given to the college over board governance from the commission that accredits community colleges and to keep the college financially afloat. The college is also seeking a new chancellor after former Chancellor David Martin left this year for Sierra College. Mitchell Bailey currently serves as the interim chancellor of City College.
“The reason why I support Luis wholeheartedly has a lot to do with his experience,” Breed said. “His experience from a financial perspective and policy perspective and administrative perspective, because that's what City College needs.”
City Attorney David Chiu also praised Zamora at the press conference. Zamora first worked for Chiu as his district director while Chui was a state assembly member representing the city.
“He's incredibly savvy when it comes to community and policy and politics, and he is unbelievably committed to public service,” Chiu said. “I can't think of someone who is more of the right person in the right time for this job.”
The Mayor’s Office said Zamaora is a first-generation college graduate with an associate degree in liberal arts from Santiago Canyon College. He is also the first openly gay Latino trustee on the board.
Zamora is also politically active serving on the board of directors of the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club.
Besides the seat vacated by Green, another seat is up for grabs this November as Trustee Shanell Williams is not running for reelection. Board President Alan Wong and Trustee Aliya Chisti are running for reelection. Other candidates running include Ruth Ferguson, Ben Kaplan, Leanne Louie, Heather McCarty and Julio Ramos.
Green was fined $2,200 by the Ethics Commission in April for failing to file paperwork required of city officials.
