Speaking For The Trees
In this week’s newsletter, we check on the state of Ocean Avenue's urban canopy and more.
Ocean Avenue streetcar trackway may get replaced to the tune of $2.1 million in 2026.
Several transit projects in the Ingleside neighborhood have been prioritized in the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s capital projects program over the next few fiscal years.
The SFMTA board in April approved its nearly $2.6 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal years between 2025 and 2029, which included 180 recommended projects spread throughout 10 different programs, such as the agency’s fleet, trackway and facilities programs. One of 180 recommended projects is to do trackwork on Ocean Avenue.
SFMTA spokesperson Michael Roccaforte said in an email to The Ingleside Light that the work involves the tangent track along Ocean Avenue at Howth Street, between the City College of San Francisco pedestrian bridge and the Interstate-280 freeway ramp. The project includes replacing worn-out rail, fasteners, ties and track pavement.
Approximately $2.1 million has been identified in the capital program for the project, which is currently in its pre-planning phase, Roccaforte, said. He added that the estimated cost, design and schedule would be further developed in the pre-planning phase. The SFMTA anticipates to start construction in the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The CIP also identified several other transit projects for prioritization with funding allocated to projects related to the K Ingleside and M Ocean View.
“Investments in K Ingleside and M Ocean View will increase ridership and reduce operating costs by improving service delivery efficiency,” an SFMTA staff report said.
Nearly $30 million has been identified for improvements to the K in the next two fiscal years for a project that the SFMTA board approved in March of this year. Those improvements included extending boarding islands and adding red transit-only lanes.
The SFMTA is also allocating funding to make improvements on the M for a project that the SFMTA board approved in February. Similar to the K project, the project for the M includes boarding island extensions and red transit-only lanes on a portion of the route. Over $5.5 million in funding was identified in the CIP.
Other capital projects in the SFMTA’s CIP include funding to maintain the 106-year-old Twin Peaks Tunnel, which is due for repairs in August.
