Speaking For The Trees
In this week’s newsletter, we check on the state of Ocean Avenue's urban canopy and more.
The 22-year-old nonprofit moved from Mission Terrace to Ingleside.
The Ocean View-Merced Heights-Ingleside Cultural Participation Project has a new home.
The nonprofit organization dedicated to arts and culture events and general neighborhood do-gooding moved to the space formerly occupied by Ingleside Gallery on Ocean Avenue at Miramar in late January.
Prior to the move, it had been operating in Mission Terrace on Ocean Avenue.
"Things are going exceedingly well,” Executive Director Maurice Rivers said, adding that there will be a special announcement in May.
Founded in 2001, the nonprofit’s mission is to promote unity and celebrate diversity throughout the OMI through creating and supporting community events that are artistically, culturally, socially and educationally focused.
Some of the events they have sponsored include toy drives, community cleanups, celebrations like Kwanzaa and Phoenix day, block parties and more. They have also organized events like the neighborhood's first ever Easter basket giveaway and first ever community baby shower.
Peter Tham, real estate agent and leader in the Ingleside Merchants Association, said he was glad the nonprofit moved to the heart of the neighborhood.
“I hope they continue to grow their services alongside the other nonprofits that serve the community,” Tham said.
OMICPP often partners with neighborhood organizations such as the Ocean Avenue Association.
Rosendo Betancourt, OAA’s small business and marketing manager, said OAA recommends that small business owners and community members stop by the new location to see how the nonprofit can help assist them.
“We’re excited that they have moved into the corridor,” Betancourt said. “They are incredible partners and coordinators in our projects and events and continue to provide numerous services and activations for our community.”
