City College of San Francisco launched its search for a permanent chancellor.

Chancellor David Martin stepped down after disputes with the college's seven-member board of trustees and labor unions. (A labor court judge found Martin made false statements about the college's financial position, which may be management fraud. The Ingleside Light has asked the District Attorney's Office whether it is investigating.) A replacement was found in Micthell Bailey, who began a year-long term as interim chancellor in May.

The college, which has about 40,000 students annually, faces tough enrollment and budget challenges. The new chancellor will be tasked with growing the college — and sticking around. The college has had a revolving door of leaders in the past decade.

“City College’s next chancellor will have an opportunity to be part of significant change in higher education in the Bay Area and throughout the state,” Trustee Alan Wong said. “The Board of Trustees is excited to find our college’s new chancellor — someone we expect will provide unifying, visionary and empathetic leadership at our complex, diverse, and trailblazing college.”

Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie told The Ingleside Light he wants to ensure the college is revitalized.

"I will work closely with the college's leadership, faculty, union and students to stabilize and increase enrollment," Lurie said in a statement in October. "This includes advocating for additional funding, expanding workforce development programs, reducing waitlists for core classes and creating new partnerships with local businesses."

The college anticipates announcing the new chancellor in May.
