Riders using the elevator will need to tap their Clipper cards at the concourse level instead of the platform level fare gate.
BART will begin replacing Balboa Park Station’s accessible fare gate near the elevator on the platform level with a new next-generation fare gate on Monday.
During construction, which is expected to be completed by Wednesday, BART will provide an accessible pathway and signs for riders through the work area, according to an announcement.
The elevator will be accessible but riders will temporarily be required to use new tap in/tap out procedures.
“During construction, riders will not be able to tap their Clipper card at the fare gate in front of the elevator on the platform,” according to an announcement. “All riders using the elevator will need to tap in and out of the station at the concourse level.”
BART has been swapping out fare gates for some time now as part of a measure to “harden” the stations to lower fare evasion.
In February, The Ingleside Light asked BART when the station’s fare gates will be upgraded.
“The most specific we can be at this point is sometime between May and December,” a spokesperson said. “The project team has not yet determined when installation at Balboa Park Station will begin.”
The transportation agency aims to upgrade all fare gates by the end of 2025.
